LOSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Max Verstappen was fastest on Friday in the only practice session ahead of qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, a day before he can secure his third consecutive Formula One title. The Red Bull driver was .334 seconds faster than Carlos Sainz Jr. and .481 seconds faster than the other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, the only driver still with a mathematical chance of challenging him for the title, was fifth fastest and .588 off the pace. The dust and sand on the circuit made it hard to find grip. “Oh my god, it’s so slippery,” Verstappen told his team over the radio. Qualifying is later on Friday. Verstappen can secure the title with at least a sixth-place finish in the sprint race on Saturday. That contest will have its own separate qualifying session earlier the same day.___AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racingSource

Published Sun, 09 Mar 2025 00:01:29 GMT

NANTES, France (AP) — Argentina has been under the gun at the Rugby World Cup ever since that opening-weekend loss to England.Playing under that pressure should, according to Pumas coach Michael Cheika, stand his team in good stead heading into the decisive Pool D finale against Japan on Sunday.“In international rugby, you don’t always have games where everything is at stake. We have been doing it since the game against England,” Cheika said on Friday.“There was talk about players who will have their first experience in matches of such importance. This is where you learn, you gain experience. They already got experience with the first important match with England where they did not deliver; I feel very good handling that knockout mentality that we have had since then.”It is essentially a win-or-go-home match in Nantes, with both Argentina and Japan on nine points and vying to finish second behind Pool D winner England.Cheika’s biggest call was who to select at flyh...

Georgia Tech’s defense is not.In simplest terms, that’ll be the story when the 17th-ranked Hurricanes (4-0, 0-0) open Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday night against the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1). But the Hurricanes think they’re ready for any surprises.“We’re systematic on offense,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “Yeah, we like certain things against certain things, but should we be in a situation where we do get some kind of surprise look schematically, rules take over. We’re built on rules. If something shows up that we haven’t seen, trust your rules and go execute.”The rules are working. Miami enters the week with the ninth-best rushing offense in the nation at ...
