Opinion: Nurses should not administer anesthesia without doctor supervision

Opinion: Nurses should not administer anesthesia without doctor supervision Gov. Jared Polis’ decision to fully “opt out” of the federal requirement that a physician supervise the administration of anesthesia by a nurse anesthetist – a requirement adhered to by the majority of states – jeopardizes Coloradans’ health and safety while failing to improve care or cut healthcare costs.Governors are permitted to remove their states from the safety requirement for facilities billing Medicare or Medicaid after consulting with the state’s boards of medicine and nursing and determining opt-out is in the “best interests of the state’s citizens.” In this case, the governor – ignoring the state medical board’s unanimous opposition – said opting out provides an additional tool to help hospitals “provide care efficiently and safely.” The governor also said that “by allowing CRNAs to focus on patients rather than supervisors, the state can help hospitals be more efficient and ensure the skills of nurses are available to more patients.”As a board-certified anesthesiologist ...

Proposed ban on Russian aluminium products will dramatically hit EU wire industry and green agenda

Proposed ban on Russian aluminium products will dramatically hit EU wire industry and green agenda As the European Commission this month finalizes its 12th sanctions package against Russia for its attack on Ukraine, several options appear to be on the table – from relatively unimpactful to potentially far-reaching. What is alarming is that the latter category may include entries that could not only hurt European importers and consumers rather than Russian exporters and producers, but also undermine EU’s green agenda, one of its hallmark policies.  According to market sources, one of the sanctions discussed by EU countries, alongside new restrictions against Russian military and IT, is a ban on Russian imports of aluminium wire rod, foil, and extrusions. While the move has not been officially approved yet and some EU member countries appear to be against it, the very fact that it is on the table for the first time since EU started sanctioning Russia’s economy in February 2022 signify both lack of new ideas and poor understanding that some restrictions can impact EU consumers as mu...

French foreign policy breaks with its Western allies

French foreign policy breaks with its Western allies The problem of bias in French foreign policy towards South Caucasus is not a new phenomenon. France, alongside the US and Russia, was a member of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Minsk Group since its foundation in 1992 with the goal of seeking a negotiated resolution to the war that had take place between Armenia and Azerbaijan, writes Taras Kuzio. The Minsk Group failed to achieve any breakthroughs during its three-decade existence and went into stagnation from 2010 when France and the US lost interest. With France and the US absent, Russia was able to capitalise on the vacuum during the Second Karabakh War as the main international negotiator and supplier of so-called ‘peacekeeping’ troops.Throughout the decade prior to the Second Karabakh War, Baku became increasingly frustrated at France’s open bias in favour of Armenia. The reasons for this were two-fold. Firstly, France and the US have the largest Armenian diasporas outside the Russian Federation....

Royal and the Serpent at the Roxy Royal and the Serpent at the Roxy: It’s been almost exactly a year since we saw Royal and the Serpent effectively lay waste to the Troubadour with one of the most exciting sets that we saw in 2022. She’s back in Hollywood with her Serpents in tow, and we bet that it’ll be even better this time.“Throughout it all, Royal looked to be having the time of her life, switching from demanding that we promise not to drink and drive, to nervous ticks, in a blink,” we wrote last year. “She’s a glorious performer, brimming with star power. Her lyrics are eminently human — one minute she’s open and vulnerable, the next she’s angry and fighting. We spoke to Royal in June of this year, and she told us that, “I just have so much music and I was originally really wanting to put an album out, but I was feeling like I had too much and I wanted to give people more. I didn’t want to make it this really big build-up to just one explosion. I wanted to give people little mini stories to build the whole worl...
