OTTAWA — Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge says she wants the role of the public broadcaster redefined before the next federal election.St-Onge says in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press that the time is now to update CBC/Radio-Canada’s mandate, to hedge against a possible change in government. She says the Liberal government believes a strong public broadcaster strengthens democracy and is promising to keep supporting it — adding she believes a Conservative government would destroy it.The Opposition Tories, who didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, have promised to defund CBC and turn its Toronto-based headquarters into housing. The federal Liberals have been promising for years to update CBC’s mandate to meet the modern needs of Canadians, even as the news industry faces job cuts and declining ad revenue, including recently announced cuts at the public broadcaster.St-Onge says she would like the new mandate to fill information gaps in loca...Man tried to disarm officer during struggle at Richmond Hill hotel: police

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Maine has now become the second state to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 Republican presidential primary ballot. Maine’s secretary of state announced the decision on Thursday night citing the same provision Colorado’s Supreme Court used less than 10 days ago.Section 3 of the 14th Amendment prohibits anyone who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. Both rulings concluded that Trump had done so leading up to and on January 6, 2021, according to the context and understanding of Section 3.What are Trump’s arguments?Trump’s lawyers argue that courts and state officials do not have the authority to disqualify him. They also charge that Trump was not given due process, meaning he was not given a proper, fair trial. Finally, they claim that Trump was not an “officer” of the United States while serving as President, and therefore has never “taken an oath…to support the constitution” as stated in Section 3. AUSTIN (KXAN) — The U.S. Department of Justice is threatening to sue Texas over its new law allowing law enforcement to arrest those who cross the border illegally unless Gov. Greg Abbott reverses course and decides not to enforce it. However, the Republican state leader appears unlikely to back down based on his fiery social media posts. In a letter obtained by KXAN, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton wrote Thursday to Abbott about Senate Bill 4, arguing it was unconstitutional and preempted by federal law. The law is set to go into effect on March 5.Boynton said if Abbott does not refrain from enforcing the law by Jan. 3, then the federal government would "pursue all appropriate legal remedies." "SB 4 effectively creates a separate state immigration scheme by imposing criminal penalties for violations of federal provisions on unlawful entry and reentry into the United States...and by authorizing state judges to order the removal of noncitizens from the Unite...Pizza joint celebrates grand opening in Albany

A Colorado Republican lawmaker is asking a state judge to block a new tax credit increase from taking effect because, he alleges, the state House’s speaker violated constitutional procedure during last month’s special session on property taxes and other relief.Rep. Scott Bottoms, of Colorado Springs, filed the suit in Denver District Court Thursday against Gov. Jared Polis and the House’s top Democrat, Speaker Julie McCluskie. Bottoms accused McCluskie of ignoring his request during the session that the tax credit bill, which will increase the Earned Income Tax Credit available to lower-income families, be read aloud in its entirety. That procedure to request a bill be read in full is guaranteed under the state constitution and has been used as a delay tactic by House Republicans against the majority Democrats in recent years.Bottoms is asking the court to block the law from taking effect and is seeking a declaration that his constitutional rights were violated.
