NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A 38-year-old man from South Carolina had an encounter with a shark in New Smyrna Beach that left him with a face bite. On Wednesday, the waters were teeming with surfers was they rode the waves that had been amplified by Hurricane Lee’s presence in the Atlantic. Daniel Hanson, an experienced surfer, reflected on the risks of sharing the ocean with sharks. “They’re just critters looking for food, you know? Like me and you. And when you go in the water, you enter the food chain,” he said. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. in the New Smyrna Beach Inlet Jetty region when aerial footage revealed the presence of several sharks in the vicinity. Despite the known risks, surfers like Hanson are undeterred. “I’ve had them swim right by me,” he said. “Bull sharks swim right by me. They’re really oblivious to you.”Shark bites in the area are typically injuries to hands or feet, often a result of...Von der Leyen’s State of the Union speech in 5 charts

The European Union has survived — and thrived — in the past five years and is ready for the next challenge: artificial intelligence. That’s one of the prominent messages Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered in her annual State of the Union address — the last such speech ahead of the looming European election in 2024, and thus possibly in her career as leader of the EU executive.Since her 2019 speech as president-elect, Ursula von der Leyen has stewarded the EU through a pandemic, economic crisis and a war on European soil. With EU elections now only eight months away, this year’s speech focused on the Commission’s work over the course of its mandate, with von der Leyen claiming a 90 percent success rate in delivering on political guidelines she presented in 2019 (although this figure has been contested.)Looking to the future, the speech paid more attention than previous years to the impact of artificial intelligence and technology on the European Unio...Escaped Pennsylvania killer Danelo Cavalcante was surrounded by tactical teams moments before a police dog subdued him

SAN DIEGO -- A forum was held in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to discuss a possible water rate hike for the city of San Diego. As proposed by the city’s Public Utilities Department, water rates will increase 10.2% beginning on Dec. 1, 2023, and up to 8.7% on Jan. 1, 2025. "The agencies that provide water to the city of San Diego are raising the rates so unfortunately, we will likely have to increase our operating cost, the cost of getting water and the cost of buying chemicals," explained Ramon Galindo, a public information officer with the City of San Diego.
