Why do the Oscars still separate acting categories by 'actor' and 'actress'?

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:30:11 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – The Grammys stopped doing it in 2012. The MTV Video Music Awards followed four years later. And, as of 2023, the Independent Spirit Awards wasn’t doing it either. So why do the Oscars still separate honorees into gender-specific categories? The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced in late January, and among this year’s contenders were 20 actors who earned nods for performances in some of 2022’s best films. But just as it was at the very first Oscars ceremony in 1929, these actors are only vying against other performers of the same gender: specifically, in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories. It's not just the Oscars, either. The Golden Globes, the Emmys and the SAG Awards still separate the year’s best “actors” and “actresses” (or in the case of the SAG Awards, “male actors” and “female actors”) into their own groups. Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:30:11 GMT

(NEXSTAR) – The start of daylight saving time is upon us again, meaning almost all Americans – Hawaii and parts of Arizona don't observe DST – are setting their clocks ahead one hour. Some, however, are calling for the bi-annual changing of the clocks to come to an end.But could we really "lock the clocks" soon?Lawmakers - both at the state and federal levels - are hoping that's the case. What is Congress doing about daylight saving time?Earlier this month, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced the Sunshine Protection Act of 2023, which would make daylight saving time permanent. So far, the bill has received bipartisan support in the Senate and has been referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. If passed, the March 12 changing of the clocks would be the final such event - we wouldn't "fall back" in November. Have a tax filing extension this year? Why you shouldn’t use it, expert says A similar bill introduced by Rubio last year passed with una...

Amy LindgrenSecond Sunday Series – Editor’s Note: This is the seventh of 12 columns on work and disability that will appear over 12 months — one on each second Sunday of the month, from September through August. Previous columns discussed higher education decisions, self-advocating, career tips for family caretakers, testing limits as a worker with disabilities, the dilemma of revealing disabilities during job search, and overall concepts of disability in the workplace. If you’re an employee with disabilities, is it enough to be working or should you also have the opportunity for promotion and to manage others?Put like that, the question sounds ridiculous. We know that all employees should be provided the opportunity to work to the top of their abilities, including the chance to supervise and lead others. The real question is whether this is happening for people with disabilities.Putting aside the overall unemployment rate, which is double that for those with disabilities than ...

Why does California still change clocks 4 years after voters approved daylight saving proposition?

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:30:11 GMT

(KTXL) — It’s almost time to change those clocks again. Daylight saving time begins on March 12 and will end on November 5. When daylight saving begins, clocks “spring forward,” making the day 23 hours, causing the states that observe to lose an hour. Sunsets are later in the day after clocks spring forward.States that observe daylight saving time gain an hour when it ends, making that day 25 hours and causing clocks to “fall back,” triggering a season of earlier sunsets. Most of the United States observes daylight saving with the exception of Hawaii and Arizona, both of which observe permanent standard time.  When is it OK to drive after consuming marijuana? California still observes daylight saving time, despite voters passing a ballot measure granting lawmakers the ability to stop the seasonal time changes. During the 2018 General Election, California voters approved Proposition 7, which would allow the state legislature to get rid of daylight saving time wi...

When Hollywood's biggest names walk head to the Oscars on Sunday, they'll notice something a little different. The normal red carpet has done a color swap and it's now a Champagne color. On Wednesday, crews rolled out the new color, but it will be still referred to as the red carpet. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel was on hand to assist with the rollout. He joked that the switch from red to Champagne showed how confident producers are that no blood will be shed this year, following last year's slap involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. Workers roll out the champagne-colored carpet for the 95th Academy Awards. March 8, 2023.This year's ceremony will be the third time Kimmel will have hosted. Days ago he revealed that he is "ready" if another slap were to occur but was choosy as to when he'd intervene. “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the s— out of them on television. And if it’s The Rock, I run,” he said.KTLA 5's ...

You probably remember the terrible fire that destroyed Manresa back in July 2014. Jensen recalled being on his way to the winery on College Avenue when he ...
