Oakland’s long-running “coal war” goes to trial with developers pitted against the city

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 01:36:58 GMT

OAKLAND — The long “coal war,” as it has become known in Oakland, will come to a head at a trial Monday that pits a prominent East Bay land developer against city officials and a chorus of environmental activists trying to prevent the transport of coal through the city’s harbor. It’s a fight that has stretched on for more than a decade since developer Phil Tagami first received approval from the city to build a large marine terminal for bulk goods at the former Army Base in West Oakland, just across from the Bay Area Toll Bridge on I-80.Ironically, the long delay — created by an extended legal battle, plus settlement talks that ultimately fell apart last year — has now become the city’s main argument for trying to void Tagami’s lease.A superior court judge will decide if Tagami and his corporate partner, Insight Terminal Solutions, breached their lease agreement by not reaching key construction milestones for the 34-acre terminal....

At any given time, about 2,500 Santa Clara County students are homeless. In hopes of pulling some out of poverty, the county plans to give 50 unhoused high schoolers a $1,200 monthly stipend to help them secure lasting homes and cover other essential needs as they enroll in college or start their careers. The “guaranteed income” program will start next summer with a $3 million infusion from the state. Recipients will be free to spend the money on whatever they choose. The aim is to provide students with temporary support once they’re no longer eligible for some federal aid upon graduation. The program “will close that benefit gap,” said David Cortese, a Democratic state senator representing the South Bay, during a news conference Friday. “It will stop this cycle, this endless cycle of graduating more and more young people into adult homelessness.”County officials on Friday were unable to say for how long students would receive the cash payment...

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — The TV show, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” is the inspiration for worship for a local congregation this summer. Specifically, the song from the show, titled, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”“We have seasonal teams that plan all of our worship, fellowship, mission, and study for each different season, on a quarterly basis,” said Pastor Stephanie Sorge, of Trinity Presbyterian Church. “I’ve been thinking for a while about trying to do a Mr. Rogers theme. Mr. Rogers was actually an ordained Presbyterian minister. He was ordained to the ministry with families through media.”Feeling inspired to combine the summer theme with a newfound personal talent, Sorge imagined creating stained glass that would provide a colorful and inspiring portal to the neighborhood beyond the windows of the church in the stately, white historic building tucked in the Sunset Heights neighborhood, along South High Street. In June 2022, like many pastors around the country, Sorge wa...

Spain and UK warn against sending cluster bombs to Ukraine

Madrid and London do not look kindly on the American decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine. The Biden administration announced on Friday that the weapons will be included in the U.S.’s next $800 million arms package to Kyiv — a decision that has raised humanitarian concerns. A cluster bomb is a weapon engineered to scatter submunitions (or “bomblets”) over a wide area, potentially risking civilian collateral damage. Washington is not party to the 2010 Convention on Cluster Munitions, endorsed by more than 100 countries, including the U.K. and Spain, and banning their use. Neither are Russia and Ukraine. “It is important to note that the Russian Federation has been indiscriminately using cluster munitions from day 1 of the unprovoked large-scale aggression,” tweeted Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov after the U.S. announcement. He committed to use the weapons with caution. But the “five principles” Kyiv is pledging to abide by fai...
